Naomi Rosenblum

© Walter Rosenblum

Naomi Rosenblum, eminent photographic historian, curator, and author, has been an educator for more than thirty years, writing, lecturing extensively, and curating international
exhibitions. Rosenblum’s groundbreaking work includes her books A World History of Photography (1984 first edition, 2019 fifth edition) and A History of Women Photographers (1994 first edition, 2010 third edition). The former, a canonical and invaluable reference for art historians, was a finalist for the Kraszna- Krausz Foundation Book Award. The latter, a definitive, eye-opening chronicle of women’s accomplishments in photography, inspired one of the first comprehensive traveling exhibitions of women’s achievements in the medium, cocurated with Barbara Tannenbaum, Chair of Prints, Drawings and Photographs and Curator of Photography, The Cleveland Museum of Art. A scholar of Paul Strand’s early work and of his films, Rosenblum served as trustee of the Paul Strand Foundation and executor of his will, and was introduced to Aperture Foundation by Michael Hoffman, its formidable longtime director. Aperture shares Rosenblum’s commitment to Strand’s work and is responsible for the Paul Strand Archive, managing and promoting the rights and legacy of this key figure of twentieth-century photography, in partnership with the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Ming Smith, Self-portrait, ca. 1988

Ming Smith was born in Detroit and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Her first book, Ming Smith: An Aperture Monograph, with contributions by Emmanuel Iduma, Greg Tate, Arthur Jafa, and Namwali Serpell, among others, will be copublished by Aperture and Documentary Arts in November 2020. A self-taught artist and former model, in the 1970s, she joined the Kamoinge Workshop and published her early work in The Black Photographers Annual. Smith is known for her poetic, often experimental meditations on jazz music, African American communities, and cultural icons—from Sun Ra and Alvin Ailey, to Gordon Parks and Grace Jones. Beginning in 2017, her work was included in the celebrated traveling exhibitions We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85 and Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, as well as in Arthur Jafa’s exhibition A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions, which traveled from London to Berlin, Prague, Stockholm, and Porto, Portugal. In 2019, Smith’s solo exhibition with Jenkins Johnson Gallery was awarded the Frieze Stand Prize at Frieze New York. Smith lives and works in New York.
