Which yoga mat is best for me?

Here are a few things to consider when trying to decide which yoga mat is the best fit:

Where will you be using your yoga mat?

A flow yoga class requires a mat with more grip to keep your arms and legs in one spot.

In a yin class, you will spend most of your time sitting on the ground so you will want to invest in a softer mat with less grip.

For classes like hot yoga, you should invest in a yoga mat designed specifically for that.

If you plan on working on your poses at home, the weight of the mat isn’t as important.  A thicker yoga mat will be more important if you plan on working outside to cushion you from small rocks and roots.  If you are taking classes outside your home or travel a lot, you will want a lightweight mat you can carry around easily.

Your height should help you make a decision which yoga mat is the best fit for you.  As a rule of thumb, you want to use a yoga mat that is at least six inches taller than you are.A standard yoga mat is only 68 inches long.  If you are taller, you will need to invest in a 72 or 74-inch long mat.

When deciding on the material for your yoga mat, you can choose anything from PVC to TPE to eco-friendly mats. Your material choice does affect the mat’s grip, weight, and durability.

How thick of a yoga mat should I get?

Most beginners choose the standard size yoga mat that’s ⅛” thick.  Some more experienced users prefer a thinner mat.

A thicker mat is better for sitting poses while a thinner mat works better for standing poses.

Here are a few of the most common yoga mat sizes and why you should choose each mat:

What materials are best for yoga mats?

You have several options to choose from for the material in your yoga mat:

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the most popular material that offers durability, stickiness, and comfort.  However, PVC is not environmentally friendly.

Rubber is another popular choice and is much more eco-friendly.

Foam mats are the eco-friendly version of a PVC mat.

Cotton mats are considered traditional yoga mats and are thin and also eco-friendly.  When wet, cotton mats actually increase grip!

While similar to cotton mats, jute mats offer the same resiliency and sustainability but are a bit rougher.

TPE has the qualities of rubber mats and will repel sweat and dirt.

Cork yoga mats are made from tree bark and rubber and are renewable, biodegradable, and antibacterial.

When should I replace my yoga mat?

You should replace your yoga mat every 12 - 24 months.

Also, you should look for a replacement yoga or Pilates mat when:

Your mat starts shedding and pilling.  A mat that's shedding and pilling affects not only your practice; it's also going to leave a mess on the floor!

You start seeing hand and toe prints on the mat.  Your yoga mat padding eventually will thin out in certain areas.  The corners of yoga mats seem to wear out the quickest, because they get the most use.

      You start slipping during poses.

Visible "bald spots" (where the surface's texture has rubbed away over time) start showing up.

Your mat is noticeably discolored or smelly.

Is there a difference between a yoga mat and a Pilates mat?

No, there is no significant difference in Pilates and yoga mats.  Pilates mats and yoga mats are interchangeable and work equally as well for each exercise.

Which yoga knee pads are best for me?

If you are looking to buy knee pads for yourself, take into consideration why you are buying them and how they will meet your needs.

Your knee pads should have enough thickness to give you both comfort and support while doing yoga poses. The recommended thickness is 5 mm - 25 mm.

Your best material options for knee pads are TPE and NBR.  Both offer a non-slippery surface for stability and won’t soak in your sweat.

Knee pads can be found in multiple sizes.  Larger knee pads help reduce joint pain.

Are there any other uses for yoga knee pads?

Besides yoga, you can use your yoga knee pads around your house for any tasks that require you to be on your knees or back, such as cleaning the tub or even weeding outside.
